My practice is characterized by site referential paintings installed within the landscape they
document over varying periods of time (from a few weeks to months). Most of my recent projects have
been outcomes of Residencies. Collectively these have contributed to the evolution of my works in
ways that would be impossible within the ubiquitous ‘white cube’. For example, subtle changes of day
light, indicating the passage of time, have consistently been integrated into both interior and
exterior site referential projects. Most recently the implications of the global climate catastrophe
have also been acknowledged by installations located within landscapes. To ignore this pervasive
disaster would be an abdication of responsibility as an artist, a family member, a rational human
being. Public access is central to the successful completion of each project. The outdoor
installations include identically scaled mirrors and painted replications of mirrors, mounted on
field easels that collectively record changes in the flora and the light across the terrain over
time. The observer/participant is immersed in the flora, its animated real-time reflection and the
static representation of the artist’s previous engagement with the site. Consequently, the site
becomes an egalitarian studio/exhibition location where artist and observer co-participate in the
successful outcome of the project. The observer/participant’s engagement with the natural world,
fleetingly reflected in a mirror, prompts contemplation on the equally transient beauty and fragility
inherent in nature itself. This ephemerality of this experience is intensified by the impermanence of
the installation.
